    (also known as)
    5 Jan 1868
    John James
    • John James married Eliza Ann (Anne or Ann) Ennever in 1868 in Holloway and they gave both their addresses as 44 Vorley Road, Holloway. John was a carpenter at the time although later joined the police force and he was recorded as 26 years old, Anne as 29. The two witnesses to the marriage were Robert & Eliza Mary Vincent, Robert having married Eliza Mary Marshall in 1866 in Stepney.
John and Anne had four children before John died at the age of 35 in 1877, their first child being named Herbert Marshall James. When Herbert was christened in 1869 in Holloway an Albert Edward Vincent, son of Robert & Eliza Mary, was christened on the same day and that family gave their address as 44 Vorley Road. By then John and Ann had moved to Wood Green.
Searches of earlier censuses and birth records failed to identify John James, whose father was named as James James, however. James was consistent about his age, being born c1841/2, and his birthplace of Romford, Essex.
Censuses and birth records did, however, identify Eliza Mary Marshall as also born in Romford about 1847 although she had claimed to be 21 years old when she married in 1866 while Robert stated he was 25. These ages appear to be an attempt to disguise the fact that Eliza was about 19 when she married and Robert eight or nine years older.
Eliza was the daughter of James Marshall and Louisa nee Hunt and can be found in Romford in 1851 with an older brother John, who was registered as John James Marshall in 1843. James and Louisa had married in December 1842. A search of the christening records at St Edward the Confessor, Romford identified:
      1. John James Marshall christened on 24/2/1843
      2. Eliza Mary Marshall christened on 28/11/1847 (with an unusual note from the curate – see notes on the christening)
No other children have been found.
James Marshall appears to die in August 1855 and Louisa nee Hunt then had two children with George Lovett, Harriet Lovett Marshall in 1857 and Louisa Lovett in 1859. She married George in April 1859 in Stepney although she was living in Romford in 1851 and in 1857 when Harriett was born and again in 1859, when Louisa was born, and in 1861.
The evidence is very strong that John James Marshall chose to change his name to just John James although there is no obvious reason for the change.
